FCB Nyasa Big Bullets have announced the hiring of their former player Peter Mponda who has penned a three-year deal as the new head coach.

A former captain with the club, Mponda returns to the role after previously serving as assistant coach under Kalisto Pasuwa from 2019 to 2023.

Bullets and Pasuwa mutually agreed not to renew his contract, with rumours suggesting the Zimbabwean may be earmarked for the Flames vacant position.

Mponda, widely regarded among promising young coaches in Malawian football, joins The People’s Team after successfully leading Silver Strikers to their first Super League title in 11 years.

During his time as assistant coach at Bullets, Mponda helped the team secure three league titles, one FDH Bank Cup, and one Airtel Top 8 Cup.

In his playing days, Mponda was a central defender and captained Malawi during the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations where they shocked Algeria with a three nil victory, before an embarrassing defeat to Angola. He also enjoyed stints with Zimbabwe’s Monomotapa, South Africa’s Santos and Black Leopards, and the Ottawa Wizards in Canada.

Bullets are expected to announce further details about Mponda’s backroom staff, following rumours that Robert Ng’ambi had turned down an offer to be Mponda’s assistant.
