A recent poll conducted by Wa Ganyu has revealed that the Malawi national football team’s new kits have not been well received by fans.
The survey, which gathered opinions from various stakeholders, showed that a significant number of respondents were dissatisfied with the design and overall appearance of the kits.
Many fans took to social media to express their disappointment. One fan, He is Joy, said: “This jersey looks like it’s from a division team.”
Others shared similar sentiments, with Hastings Fantastic Msola saying: “Honestly, this is not a good jersey.” While Owen Phiri bluntly stated, “this jersey is a mess.”
The kits are part of a two-year sponsorship deal between the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and sportswear brand Admiral, worth K400 million. The agreement will carter for national teams at all levels.
Despite excitement surrounding the partnership, the new design has failed to impress a large section of the fan base.
Former Super League of Malawi (Sulom) president Tiya Somba-Banda wrote on his Facebook page: “The Big Bullets training kit is now the Flames away jersey.”
Sports commentator Kimu Kamau believes fans will not buy this kit and has asked FAM to take a step in addressing people’s opinions.
“FAM still has time to address what people are saying. Since the jersey has not been printed, FAM can ask Admiral to redesign this jersey before printing. Ilitu ndi vuto la FAM losapanga consult moyenera,” he said.
FAM President Fleetwood Haiya defended the deal, emphasizing that proceeds will help cover shortfalls in national team funding.
Meanwhile, Admiral General Manager Roger Livesey expressed his enthusiasm for expanding the company’s presence in Malawi through the partnership.
The Admiral-designed Flames apparel is expected to hit the market in May, and the team will debut the new kits next Thursday in Lilongwe during their World Cup qualifier against Namibia.
