Malawi Schools girls team head coach Bridget Chirwa has expressed optimism about the future of her players despite the team’s early exit from the on-going tournament in Ghana.
Speaking after the conclusion of the group stage matches, Chirwa said her main objective was to gain experience and prepare for future competitions.
“Our goal was to reach the finals, but I still believe we have achieved something valuable,” said Chirwa.
“Most of the players were participating in such a tournament for the first time, and this experience will be crucial for their development.”
Although the Malawi team failed to score a single goal and lost all three matches—1-0 to Benin and Morocco and 3-0 to host nation Ghana—Chirwa remained upbeat.
She noted that 11 players from the current squad are eligible for a promotion to the U17 team, which bodes well for the future.
“I am proud of the team’s performance, especially knowing that 11 of our players are set to join the U17 national side. With the lessons learned here, I have strong confidence that they will perform well in upcoming competitions,” Chirwa added.
