Malawi Men’s Football team assistant coach Peter Mponda says a 2-0 defeat on Sunday against South Africa in Chan qualifiers was not a true reflection of the game saying Malawi played better than South Africa.
Mponda who took charge following head coach Kalisto Pasuwa’s short illness said his side failed to give Bafana Bafana much pressure hence failed to create meaningful chances.
“I am worried about the defeat; otherwise South Africa never gave us too much pressure. Our defence failed to give us what we wanted,” said Mponda.
“The result is not a true reflection, we played very well, we tried to contain them, of course they were ahead of us in terms of chances created. But contained them, we gave them easy goals; otherwise we were going into penalties or extra time. The way the guys played there were a lot of positives, from the midfield we managed to keep the ball well. There is good progress; we are taking a good path. Defensively we were not there,” said Mponda.
Malawi has exited the Chan qualification on a 2-1 aggregate. They beat South Africa in Malawi last week through a Zeliat Nkhoma header before going down at Loftus Stadium today in South Africa.
Bafana Bafana scored through Victor Letsoalo and Neo Maema.
