Whether honest or not, the decision by referee Honest Maulana to postpone the league match between Mighty Wanderers and Ekhaya FC on Wednesday has sparked debate, as the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) says it will investigate after noting a potential breach of procedures.

The match was suspended in the 52nd minute due to heavy rain. After a 22-minute delay, players were seen leaving the dressing rooms and walking out of Kamuzu Stadium, indicating that the match would not continue.

According to Sulom General Secretary, Williams Banda, the officials’ decision to end the game appeared to have been made without adhering to the required procedures.

The league’s regulations state that when a match needs to be abandoned, Sulom must be consulted, and a waiting period of at least 40 minutes must be observed.

We are gathering information to determine who was responsible for the match not continuing,” said Banda. “We want to assure the public that everything is under control, and we will communicate the next steps once our investigation is complete,” he added.

Sulom has since reminded teams and match officials to consult the league in similar situations and to follow established protocols strictly.
