Mukuru, in partnership with the Netball Association of Malawi (NAM), has launched a K60 million Under-21 Netball League that will run from November to January next year. The launch event took place at Don Bosco in Area 23, Lilongwe, marking the beginning of a three-year sponsorship commitment aimed at transforming youth netball in Malawi.
The competition brings together promising teams from the northern, central, and southern regions, with matches set to begin at the district level and progress to regional contests, culminating at the national stage.
To set the tone for the tournament, Vanessa Sisters Under-21 delivered a commanding performance on Sunday, thrashing Belinda Sisters 63–18 during the launch match. From the first whistle to the final quarter, Vanessa Sisters dominated play, demonstrating superior movement, precise passing, and accurate shooting that overwhelmed their opponents.
Head coach Chisomo Tibu praised his team’s energy and discipline, expressing confidence in their future.
“I’m happy with how the girls played. We are building a strong team for the future,” he said.
Speaking during the launch, Mukuru’s marketing and partnership lead, Taleetha Jussab said the league is part of the company’s mission to uplift and empower young women through sport.
“At Mukuru, we believe empowerment begins with opportunity. Whether it’s helping families send money home safely, receiving funds from abroad at no fee into the Mukuru Wallet, or creating opportunities like this to empower young women through sports. Our mission is to help people rise,” she said.
NAM general secretary Yamikani Kauma applauded Mukuru for taking a leading role in youth sports development.
“This is an important milestone in the development of netball in the country. We thank Mukuru for investing in the dreams and opportunities of our netball stars. This competition will go a long way in nurturing players for the national team,” she said.
With a strong start and a long-term sponsorship in place, the Mukuru Under-21 Netball League promises to uncover fresh talent, energise districts and regions, and strengthen the future of Malawian netball.
