Kwatha! Sadyeka wadyeka. After playing 24 league games without a defeat, Mighty Wanderers have finally tasted defeat in the hands of struggling Mzuzu City Hammers—a team that is fighting for relegation.
Isaiah Nyirenda damaged Nomads’ record with just three minutes to go. Referee Newton Nyirenda had added 7 minutes to decide the winner.
By that time the match was at 1-1 with Nomads scoring first through Promise Kamwendo which was cancelled by Samson Olatubosun’s header to level the scores at 73 minutes.
When everyone thought the spoils will be shared, Isaiah decided otherwise at 94 minutes and finished home a rebound to give Hammers all points.
The mood changed, though Nomads players tried to regroup in order to salvage a point but it was too late for Angelezi.
Their defeat means that they have failed to dislodge their rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets on top of the table. Both have 56 points from 25 games but Bullets, despite coming from a 2-0 defeat to Creck Sporting Club, lead on goal difference.
However, Wanderers coach Bob Mpinganjira is confident that they will win the league.
“We will work hard in the remaining games. We still have a chance to win the league,” he said.
In a joyful mood, Hammers coach Elias Chirambo praised his players for their strong performance.
“I assembled a good squad. The team is okay now, and I repeat, we will survive [relegation],” he said.
Following the victory, Mzuzu City Hammers have moved to position 14, still close to the relegation zone with three games left to play, but now with renewed hope of staying in the Super League.
