Malawi women’s national football team coach Lovemore Fazili says his side is focused on delivering a strong performance at the FIFA Series as the Scorchers tune up for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) scheduled for July.

Fazili was speaking in a pre-match interview on Friday ahead of their clash with Australia Women, The Matildas, today, Saturday, 11 April, in Nairobi, Kenya.

He expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness despite notable absences, including the Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa, a situation he described as a significant setback.

“We have prepared well for these matches. Even though we are without our captain, Tabitha Chawinga, and Temwa, we still have players competing in Europe. It is a big blow, but we believe in the players available,” said Fazili.

The Scorchers mentor emphasised the importance of the match, noting that it offers not only Malawi but also African football an opportunity to gain recognition on the global stage.

“These games are very important. They give Malawi and Africa a platform to show European nations that we also have strong teams. I have encouraged the players not to be intimidated by Australia. Football is the same everywhere, and our goal is to win. If we do that, it will mean we have performed well,” he added.

The fixture marks a historic moment for the Scorchers, who are ranked 153rd in the FIFA global rankings, as it will be their first-ever meeting against top-tier opposition, with Australia ranked 15th. The match provides a crucial benchmark ahead of their WAFCON finals in July.
