Long at last, FAM will refund for cancelled Malawi Vs Equatorial Guinea match

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says it will issue refunds to ticket holders for the cancelled 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifier between Malawi and Equatorial Guinea on October 9, 2025.

The match, which was expected to attract thousands of supporters at Bingu National Stadium never took place after Equatorial Guinea informed FIFA and FAM just hours before kick-off that they would not travel to Malawi.

Since the cancellation, some supporters have been wondering what would happen to the tickets they had already purchased with others dragging the association to competition and fair trade commission malawi (CFTC).

Early FAM had communicated that supporters will watch the Scorchers match for free or else watch a Flames training match day at night, a move which others were not satisfied with.

According to a media release issued by FAM today, fans who bought tickets online will receive their refunds directly through the mobile money accounts used during purchase.

Meanwhile, holders of physical tickets are required to visit FAM offices at Bingu National Stadium for verification before refunds are processed.

In a move aimed at keeping supporters connected to the national team, FAM has also allowed fans to use their old tickets for the Flames’ 2027 AFCON qualifying matches scheduled for September 2026.

The Association has promised to continue ensuring that supporters receive fair treatment and value for their commitment to Malawian football.
