Malawi’s athletics representatives, Amanda Khondowe and Nathan Chisale, have departed for Glasgow, Scotland, to compete in the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The pair, accompanied by coach Pachisi Nyasulu, departed from Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe on Wednesday. They join Malawi’s netball, boxing, and swimming teams, who are already in Scotland finalising their preparations. The nation’s judo team is scheduled to depart on 27 July, completing Team Malawi’s contingent.
Chisale will compete in the men’s 5,000 metres, while Khondowe will race in both the women’s 100m and 200m events.
Both athletes will be making their Commonwealth Games debut after earning their spots with impressive performances at the 2025 African Union Sports Council Region 5 Youth Games in Windhoek, Namibia. Chisale secured gold in the 5,000m, while Khondowe took bronze in the 200m.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games have officially begun with a vibrant opening ceremony in Glasgow, ushering in days of competition featuring athletes from across the Commonwealth.
As the athletes set off, the Malawi National Council of Sports wished the entire Team Malawi contingent success as they prepare to compete on the international stage.
“We wish Team Malawi every success as they proudly fly the Malawi flag and make the nation proud. Go Malawi!” said the council.
Malawi will be represented in athletics, netball, boxing, swimming, and judo as the nation aims to make its mark on the international stage.
