Mighty Wanderers fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Simba SC in the first leg of their CAF Champions League tie at Bingu National Stadium on Sunday.
Simba began the contest with greater intensity. In the 3rd minute, a long-range effort flew over the bar. The Tanzanian side continued to threaten from set pieces, winning several early corners, one of which struck the post.
Wanderers produced attractive passages of play involving Muhammad Sulumba, Gaddie Chirwa and Stanley Sanudi, but these moves lacked a clinical final touch inside the penalty area.
As the first half developed, the Nomads grew in confidence. They pressed higher up the pitch and limited Simba’s attacking opportunities. A free-kick for the visitors was wasted, while Wanderers themselves created a dangerous free-kick situation late in the half. Sanudi’s delivery led to a shot from Singini that cleared the bar, and another late chance was well saved by the Simba goalkeeper.
The teams went into the interval level at 0-0, with the home side having finished the half on the front foot.
The second half opened at a slower tempo before Wanderers regained control and began to apply sustained pressure.
In the 56th minute, Sulumba was presented with a clear opportunity inside the box but failed to convert.
The decisive moment arrived in the 65th minute. A long ball from Simba goalkeeper Djibrilla Kassali and finds Anicent Oura capitalised on defensive hesitation by Wanderers captain Emmanuel Nyirenda to fire Simba into a 1-0 lead.
Wanderers responded with renewed urgency, launching repeated attacks in search of an equaliser. In the 84th minute, Blessings Singini forced another solid save from the Simba goalkeeper, but the home side could not find a way through a resolute defence.
Simba defended their slender advantage successfully to claim a valuable away victory in the first leg.
