Malawian football witnessed a historic and emotional moment on 24 December 2025, as Mighty Tigers were officially relegated from the TNM Super League for the first time.

Founded in 1980 as Admarc Tigers, the Blantyre-based side earned promotion to the Super League in 1984 and quickly established itself as one of Malawi’s traditional giants.

Their finest moment came in 1989, when they were crowned Super League champions, having earlier finished second in 1986.

For 38 consecutive years, the Kau Kau boys remained in the Premier League despite facing some turbulence but they survived relegation.

Their fate was sealed at Nankhaka Stadium in Lilongwe, where a narrow 1–0 defeat to Blue Eagles confirmed relegation with one match still to play. The result marked a painful end to a season that never went according to plan.

Mighty Tigers have struggled for survival over the past five consecutive seasons, repeatedly escaping relegation by fine margins.

However, the 2025 campaign proved too difficult to overcome. With 27 points from 29 matches, the team managed only six wins, nine draws, and suffered 14 defeats.

Tigers become the second team to be relegated, following Songwe Border United.

Despite their current struggles, Tigers’ contribution to Malawian football remains significant.

The club has produced numerous talented players who have gone on to feature for top sides such as Mighty Wanderers, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, Silver Strikers, and other teams across the country. Their role in player development is widely respected.

The Kau Kau boys have been relegated under the leadership of coach Trevor Kajawa who replaced Leo Mpulula with 13 games to play. Kajawa was roped in to help the team win the relegation battle but this time around it was not be possible.

The club is owned by Robin Alufandika, who has overseen Tigers through both their glorious and difficult times.

Once regarded as one of Malawi’s football heavyweights, Tigers will now compete in the NBS Bank National Division next season.
