Now this is unprecedented. Super League sponsors, TNM plc, have cemented their relationship with the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) by unveiling an increased sponsorship package for the elite league from K150 million to K500 million per season.
The rise represents a 233 percent increase.
TNM acting Chief Executive Officer Mitchel Helbert said the company has committed to sponsor the league for the next three years.
Helbert made the announcement on Wednesday evening at Sunbird Mt Soche in Blantyre where he stressed the company’s love for football and people that follow the game in the country .
He said TNM decided to go the extra mile in hiking sponsorship despite the economic challenges that Malawi is currently facing .
“Well at TNM we believe in football, TNM is football in fact, every Malawian has a huge passion for football and TNM is Malawian so it is our duty to contribute to football for everyone in Malawi’,he said .
With the new sponsorship package, K176 million will go towards teams prizes with the winner taking home K100 million. Individual awards have been allocated K10 million, K160M has gone to teams subventions with each team set to receive K10 million.
TNM has also set aside K50 million for grassroots football.
Hebert stressed that the new TNM Super League Sponsorship package comes with a lot of innovation including the Mpamba debit card
“We have heard a lot about e-ticketing for a long time. Its working now ,we have actually presented it at two the games and it is now going to be at every Sulom sanctioned game this year
“What is it? Basically it is a banking card . So of course you can buy match day tickets electronically, you do not have to queu anymore ,you do not have to worry about cash or worry about someone stealinjg your cash ,now it is all with a card which you simply swipe on a machine at the game and you go in “, he said .
Sulom President Colonel Gilbert Mitawa said he was overwhelmed with joy and excitement with the TNM Super League sponsorship increase.
“We are grateful to TNM plc for the wonderful gesture and on behalf of our respective clubs, who are the affiliates of Sulom, we are also very grateful to TNM for this increased sponsorship ‘,Col Mitawa said.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM ) president Fleetwood Haiya lauded the new TNM Super League sponsorship package as a dream come true:
“During my campaign for the FAM Presidency in December 2023, I made a solemn promise to see to it that our elite league sponsorship should be at the minimum of half a billion Kwacha. Not many believed that this would be possible.” Haiya said.
