Chilobwe United Football Club has strengthened security awareness in Chilobwe after organizing a community policing training for neighbourhood watch and security groups in the area, with support from the Malawi Police Service.
The training focused on community policing and crowd control during football matches, including guidance on how local security personnel can effectively work as stewards during games.
Speaking on behalf of the club, Chilobwe United spokesperson Julio Chimbuzi said the initiative was aimed at improving security in the area and equipping community security groups with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties professionally.
He added that the club believes empowering local security teams is key to creating a safer environment both in the community and during match days.
Meanwhile, Francis Selebu, the Officer-in-Charge for Chilobwe Police Station, commended the club’s leadership for organizing the training, saying that many community security members lack formal guidance on how to carry out their responsibilities.
“I would like to commend Chilobwe United for thinking about organizing this training for youths involved in neighbourhood security. The training will help reduce criminal activities in the area and improve how security personnel conduct their work,” said Selebu.
One of the participants, McDonald Khombeya, who is the Chairperson of the Chilobwe Neighbourhood Watch Forum, said the training was highly beneficial and expressed confidence that all participants gained valuable knowledge.
During the event, Chilobwe United also donated security equipment, including reflective vests and batons, to the neighbourhood watch members.
On the pitch, Chilobwe United currently sits top of the Thumbs Up Premier League with 59 points from 29 matches, and is remaining with a game to conclude the season.
