Drama in the BetPawa Women’s League, teams boycott second round fixtures, push for their money

Second round games done, no money paid, officials keep promising as teams have decided to boycott matches till BetPawa and FAM give them their money, Wa Ganyu with details

At the launch of the women’s league on April 25 this year, the communication was that each participating and duly registered team would receive K3 million as subvention fees and K1 million bonus for the winning team in each match.

Games kicked off and the first round was concluded in September 2025 in all three regions and the second round was supposed to kick off the second week of October but teams have agreed not to return on the ground. ‘No money, No games.’ Akuti sakupita pagalaundi mpaka ndalama zibwere.

On October 14, teams wrote FAM and BetPawa officials notifying them that they have abandoned second round fixtures until outstanding matters regarding subvention and player’s bonuses are fully resolved.

On October 17, FAM apologized to teams telling them that the delay was necessitated by a number of factors but assured them that money will be issued within the month of October. They wrote:

“Once we submit all documents tomorrow [October 18], we expect the sponsors will start working on disbursing the funds hopefully next week or the other.”

As we write, December 6, 2025, teams have not received their money.

A source told Wa Ganyu that BetPawa informed teams that the delays are because transactions are bouncing.

“They told us that they have been working on making payments for first round matches but both TNM Mpamba and Airtel Money transactions are bouncing back,” said the source.

On April 25, 2025, Football Associationwith of Malawi (FAM) secured a landmark K389 million sponsorship deal with BetPawa Malawi to support the Women’s Football Regional Leagues.

It includes; K90 million in club subventions, with each receiving K3 million, K8.7 million was allocated for end-of-season awards. K17.5 million to league administration while K273.24 million was set aside for players and technical staff as part of the “Locker Room Bonus” initiative.

Teams participating in the tournament are Ndirande Soccer Giants, Ekhaya FC, Chitoliro Heroines, Allan Ladies, Bvumbwe Women FC, Zomba City Lioness, Nsuwadzi Queens, FOMO, CY Sisters, Green City, Lahewe Sisters, Rumphi KK Academy, Mzuzu Hammers Queens, Hungry Lions FC, Cleck Sporting FC, FACT Women FC, Blue Eagles Ladies FC, Heroes Sporting Academy, Chilinde Queens, Dedza Dynamos Super Queens, Kamuzu Institute for Sport FC.
