Mighty Wanderers President Dr. Thomson Mpinganjira has accused football administrators in Malawi of being anti-development, following their failure to grant the club permission to redevelop Chilomoni Stadium.
Speaking during the Wa Ganyu Exclusive programme on Tuesday evening, Mpinganjira expressed deep frustration over stalled plans to upgrade the historic ground, saying repeated engagements with football authorities yielded no tangible results.
Firstly, Mpinganjira said he initially took office with great enthusiasm and optimism, driven by a vision to improve infrastructure for the club and Malawian football at large. However, that excitement gradually faded due to what he described as unnecessary resistance from football administrators.
“When we came in, I was very excited. We prepared proposals and were enthusiastic about developing our own stadium, the MDC Stadium. These plans even started during the time of Tiya Somba at SULOM, but we kept facing roadblocks,” said Mpinganjira.
He also revealed that Wanderers had already mobilised significant resources to kick-start the redevelopment project, but the initiative was halted without clear justification.
“At one point, we set aside K190 million to revamp the ground, but people blocked the process. It reached a stage where it was clear that some individuals did not want Wanderers to take over and develop the stadium,” he explained.
The Nomads boss disclosed that even efforts by his son, William Mpinganjira, to engage the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) did not bear fruit, leaving them with no option but to step back.
“William Mpinganjira also tried to hold discussions with FAM, but nothing worked. Football administration in Malawi is so anti-developmental. I don’t know why,” he lamented.
In conclusion, Mpinganjira said his interest in pursuing the project has since diminished, saying that he cannot continue pleading for permission to invest in development.
“At this point, the interest is gone. I cannot beg someone to allow me to build something meant to develop the game. It has to be them begging us not us begging them,” he added.
