Gilbert can shock us—told to win the league as Bullets continue their search for a new coach

The FCB Nyasa Big Bullets situation may appear complicated, but perhaps they understand exactly what is on the paper.

Heading into the 2026 football season, Bullets have placed their trust in an interim technical panel led by coach Gilbert Chirwa, who took charge following the sacking of coach Peter Mponda who is now with Masters FC.

However, this does not mean the club has abandoned its search for a new head coach. Chirwa could either be demoted or promoted along the way, and he has also applied for the position.

In this week’s Wa Ganyu Exclusive with Bullets Chief Executive Officer Albert Chigoga, which will be aired tomorrow from 6pm, Chigoga made it clear that handing responsibility to Chirwa does not mean the club’s plans to recruit a new coach have been scrapped.

No, that is not the case,” Chigoga said.

“We are not under pressure to bring in a replacement. We have an interim technical panel which we trust to deliver results. Some members of this panel can even coach any team in Malawi. They need support, and we believe they will take us far,” he added.

Addressing the matter further, Chigoga said: “We are not completely abandoning the recruitment process, but we need to follow the right procedures.

“We do not want Wa Ganyu to come to us tomorrow asking why we have dismissed a coach we have just recruited. We are not rushing things. These coaches know the players we had and those we have signed. There is a working relationship between them and the players, and they can shock us with their results.”

Asked about the targets set for Chirwa and his backroom staff, Chigoga said: “We cannot go three seasons without winning the league — chaka chino tikokerana katunduyu. Last season, although people did not give us a chance, we finished with two trophies. This year, we need the league and more silverware.”
