Mighty Wanderers have reappointed Tiya Somba Banda as a Board Director, marking a significant return to the club’s leadership.
The club confirmed his return on Wednesday morning through a statement posted on their official Facebook page. The statement said Banda will serve on both the Football and Development Committee (FDC) and the Commercialisation Committee.
The return of the former Super League of Malawi (Sulom) president has raised a number of questions regarding the reasons that forced him to step down as a Wanderers board member last year.
A letter announcing Banda’s resignation on 5 August 2025 indicated that it was not possible for him to remain a Wanderers board member due to a conflict of interest, as he was also serving as a CAF General Coordinator.
This was stated at the time when the club was preparing to participate in the CAF Confederation Cup.
“As we prepare for the upcoming CAF Confederation Cup, a potential conflict of interest was identified involving Tiya Somba Banda, who serves as both Director of Mighty Wanderers and CAF General Coordinator. To ensure the integrity and fairness of the competition, it was necessary for Mr Tiya Somba Banda to step down from his position on the Wanderers Board,” reads part of the letter dated 5 August 2025.
Now, with Wanderers set to compete in the CAF Champions League this season—an ambition earlier confirmed by the club president, Thomson Mpinganjira—it is not clear whether Banda will resign again or if he has already stepped down from his CAF role.
