The Malawi Women’s National Football Team, popularly known as The Scorchers, have made history by sealing their first ever qualifying for their first—ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON)—a feat that has created excitement and pride across the country.
Having made an international debut in 2022, the Scorchers continue to reach new heights, with their latest success marking a major milestone for women’s football in Malawi.
The team officially secured a place at the 2026 WAFCON to be hosted in Morocco after beating Angola 2–0 on aggregate. The decisive win came at Bingu National Stadium, where Faith Chimzimu scored two late goals to send the electric crowd into euphoria.
The first leg in Luanda last week ended goalless.
Nationwide Celebration and Pride
Following the historic qualification, Malawians from all walks of life have expressed excitement and joy with the team’s achievement as some took to the streets in the major cities to celebrate.
The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President, Fleetwood Haiya could not hide his happiness. He celebrated with the girls after the match while lifting captain Tabitha Chawinga at his back and danced in front of supporters.
After the match he wrote on his Facebook page: “A step higher, a mammoth record broken. A maiden WAFCON qualification. Congratulations to the Scorchers—history has been made. Are we transforming the game? Yes we are.”
Reactions from football commentators and supporters
Charles Nyirenda said the qualification was a result of steady progress over recent years and gives Malawi’s top female players a chance to display their talent on a bigger stage.
“The girls have been doing well so consistently the past four to five years. We now have world—class players who needed to parade their skills on the continental stage before they retire one day. They majestically secured that platform today.
“I hope this accomplishment will inspire future generations to follow in the footsteps of their elders who have shown the way,” Nyirenda told Wa Ganyu.
Parry Chinyama said the qualification gives players a chance to take their careers further.
“It is good that we have qualified. This will be a platform for more of our Scorchers players to showcase their unique skills and secure contracts in Europe,” said Chinyama.
Football fan Sandram Phiri appealed to FAM and the corporate world to support the team as they prepare for the continental showpiece.
“This is the time for companies and FAM to come forward and support the Scorchers so they can have adequate preparations for the competition,” said Phiri.

From the humble beginnings to regional champions
The Scorchers’ first official match was played in 2002, ending in an 8–0 defeat to Zambia in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Over the years, they have grown into one of Southern Africa’s most competitive side. In 2020, they adopted the name “Scorchers,” replacing “She-Flames,” to reflect their energy and determination on the field.
The Scorchers’ first breakthrough came in 2023, when they won the COSAFA Women’s Championship after beating Zambia 2–1 in the final held in South Africa—their first-ever regional title. The win inspired many young female footballers across the nation.
In 2025, their progress received a major boost when National Bank of Malawi plc signed a sponsorship deal to support both the national team and the newly introduced 10—club Women’s Premier League, helping to grow women’s football across various levels.
