The Football Association of Malawi’s Referees Committee has taken disciplinary action against match officials involved in the Super League match between FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Ekhaya which took place on 3rd July 2025.

Following a statement released by FAM, referee Michael Mwambyale has been suspended for three months for failing to act during an incident involving Ekhaya goalkeeper Elias Missi and Bullets striker Babatunde Adepoju. Missi allegedly grabbed Adepoju’s neck, sparking controversy.

During the Committee’s meeting held on 7 July 2025, they found Mwambyale’s inaction unacceptable leading to the suspension. Additionally, second assistant referee Fanuel Mailosi has been suspended for two months.

As part of the disciplinary action Mwambyale will be relegated to the National Division League for the remainder of the season after serving his three months’ suspension.

This means in a space of one year, Mwambyale has faced two punishments. In 2023, he was suspended to 6 months ban for disallowing Mighty Tigers goal against Mighty Wanderers at Mpira Stadium and he also failed to send out striker Christopher Kumwembe, who had accumulated two yellow cards.

Meanwhile, the Referees’ Committee has also recommended that Ekhaya goalkeeper Missi be punished for violent conduct.

Missi grabbed Babatunde’s neck

The goalkeeper of Ekhaya FC should be reprimanded for violent conduct and barbaric behaviour as he was not punished during this game,” reads part of the statement.

The match between Ekhaya and Bullets ended 1-0 in favour of Bullets with a lone goal from Babatunde.
