It’s a weekend to forget for Mighty Tigers after failing to hold on to their 2-0 halftime lead, succumbing to a 3-2 defeat against Salima-based soldiers Mafco at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday afternoon.
The Kaukau boys took the lead in the 36 minutes through Daniel Shadreck and Masambiro Kalua extended the lead in added time before the halftime whistle.
However, the soldiers came out strong in the second half, exerting pressure and scoring goals.
Peter Katsonga narrowed the margin to 2-1 in the 64 minutes, and Mphatso Philimon equalised six minutes before the final whistle. Auspicious Kadzongola scored the winner just 50 seconds later and it was over for Tigers.
Mafco’s Assistant Coach Jimmy Mzunga praised his team’s superb second-half performance though he lamented missed scoring chances in the first half.
“It was a good game, but we conceded early goals and failed to utilise our chances in the first half. However, my boys performed better in the second half, and we secured the victory,” he said.
Tigers’ coach Leo Mpulula expressed disappointment with the result, describing the late goals as ‘simple goals’ that his team should not have conceded.
With the win, Mafco moved to eighth on the log table with 16 points, while Tigers are fourth from the bottom with 12 points.
Elsewhere, Karonga United comfortably defeated FOMO 3-0 at Karonga Stadium, with a brace from Blessings Mwalilino and a goal from Allen Chihana.
The victory pushed Karonga United to tenth position with 15 points, while FOMO is not safe to the relegation zone as they sit on position 12 with 14 points.
