A stunning 84th-minute free-kick by Talandira Kachala was all what Junior Scorchers were waiting for to book a place in the final of this year’s COSAFA Under-17 Women’s Championship currently underway in Namibia.

The Malawi U17 Women’s National Football Team dominated proceedings on Friday afternoon with numerous chances throughout the match, but struggled to convert in the final third.

Kachala stepped up in the crucial moment, curling in a superb solo free-kick to seal the hard-fought victory.

Following the win, Malawi will face Zambia in the final tomorrow on Saturday, May 17. Zambia advanced after a commanding 5-1 win over Zimbabwe in their semi-final clash.

Head coach Chisomo Nkhoma praised her charges for their resilience and determination.

I am proud of the girls. Mozambique really pushed us, and we could not score as many goals as we wanted. But the team remained composed and showed great character,” she said.

Looking ahead to the final, Nkhoma acknowledged the challenge of facing a strong Zambian side, who are also the defending champions.

We may be under pressure because we are playing a team that is currently holding the title. But we must stick to our game plan, stay solid at the back, and trust in what we can do,” added Nkhoma.

Malawi heads into the final with an impressive tournament record—scoring 10 goals in three matches and yet to concede a single goal.
