In May 2023, Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) and coach Peace Chawinga parted ways. In July 2023, Peace Chawinga dragged NAM to court for unlawful dismissal.
On 24th January 2024, NAM appointed Joana Kachilika, former Malawi Queens captain as coach with Eleanour Mapulanga her assistant.
Her appointment followed the firing of coach Chawinga. Just 11 months, Kachilika was fired following her dismal performance in South Africa where the team lost all three games.
NAM has brought back Chawinga as head coach together with legend Mary Waya with immediate effect.
“Upon completion of the process of review for the National Teams Technical Teams, all technical contracts, the technical qualifications, technical experience, the performance of the teams; and in consideration of the need to ensure the National Teams are poised to perform with the best and at the best level of fitness and performance, the Netball Association of NAM has made the following changes to the coaching panels of the 3 National Teams effective 19th November 2024,” reads part of the statement.
Kachilika has been re-appointed as the head coach of the under-21 team with Christina Mkwanda, who was the coach for under-21 National team as her vice coach.
NAM has also appointed Towera Vinkhumbo as head coach for under-18 National team with Rose Chinyama who was the head coach for under-19 National team as the vice coach.
Other notable changes include the appointment of Madano Tepetheya as physical trainer for the senior team, Edith Kaliati as technical advisor for the teams.
During Chawinga’s reign as the head coach, she won the Cosana Tri-Netball series which Malawi hosted in 2022.
