In the aftermath of Mafco FC’s 2-0 loss to Mighty Wanderers, head coach Stereo Gondwe had opened up about his decision to start second-choice goalkeeper Owen Mbale over the usual number one, Christopher Mikuwa.
When questioned specifically about the decision to start Mbale, Gondwe was clear in his reasoning. “The player who performs well in training gets to play.”
Reflecting on the defeat, Gondwe admitted that his side conceded unnecessary goals but emphasized the importance of giving opportunities to new players.
“We had a good game, but we need to work on a few things, especially giving chances to our new players to see how they perform,” Gondwe stated.
“We only had two chances, and we conceded silly goals which cost us the game.”
On the other hand, Wanderers’ head coach Bob Mpinganjira expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, praising his players for securing the win without conceding.
“At times we looked shaky due to the break we had, but the team managed to hold on,” noted Mpinganjira.
Clement Nyondo and Promise Kamwendo were the goal scorers for Wanderers, with Nyondo opening the scoring just four minutes into the match and Kamwendo doubling the lead in the 40th minute. Nyondo’s performance earned him the man of the match award for his goal and an assist.
The victory sees Wanderers rise to second place on the log with 9 points from three games, while Mafco drops to 11th with 6 points.
