Malawi set for CAF Women’s Champions League

Blantyre, Malawi – August 2024 is set to be a historic month for Malawi as the nation prepares to host the CAF Women’s Champions League 2024 COSAFA Qualifiers for the first time.

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) has assured that all preparations are well on track, signalling Malawi’s readiness to deliver a world-class football tournament.

LOC Chairperson Felister Dossi who is also Football Association of Malawi (FAM) executive committee member expressed confidence in the country’s ability to host a successful event.

“We are excited to welcome the best women’s football clubs from Southern Africa to Malawi. Our preparations have been intense, and the people of Malawi can expect a top-tier tournament,” Dossi stated.

The tournament, which will run from August 15-24, 2024, at Blantyre’s Mpira Stadium, will feature eight teams, including Malawi’s own Women Football National Champions Ascent Academy, Herentals Queens FC (Zimbabwe), FC Ongos Ladies (Namibia), University of Western Cape (South Africa), Green Buffaloes (Zambia), Gaborone United Ladies (Botswana), UD Lichinga (Mozambique), and Young Buffaloes (Eswatini).

This event marks a significant milestone for Malawi, showcasing the country’s growing capability in organising major sporting events.

Dossi highlighted the extensive collaboration with various stakeholders, including the ministry of sports, Police, ministry of health and other crucial agencies to meet the high standards required for such a prestigious tournament.

The LOC has ensured that all logistical aspects, including accommodation and training facilities, are meticulously planned.

Teams will be lodged at Malawi Sun, Serendib, and Crossroads hotels with referees housed at Victoria Hotel. The Mpira Stadium will serve as the primary venue with Kamuzu Stadium and St Andrews available for training.
