Money goes back to Reserve Bank as Bankers win 9th league title

After 11 years of trying, coach Peter Mponda ended the 11-year league drought for Silver Strikers with two games to go following a 0-1 victory against Mighty Mukuru Wanderers on Saturday afternoon at Kamuzu Stadium.

In his debut season at the helm of the Central Bankers, Mponda has made history by collecting a double over second placed Wanderers courtesy of a 63rd goal from right-back MacDonald Lameck.

On the return match, following a two nil first round victory, Mponda employed an unusual formation, featuring a defensive formula that saw his side not registering a shot on target.

Despite Wanderers enjoying possession in the first half, it was only Mischeck Botoman who fired one shot on target that was easily handled by goalkeeper of the season, George Chikooka.

In the second half, Lameck pounced on a defensive lapse to shoot on goal, beating Flames number one, William Thole. And from there, Nomads had no response.

The win stretches Silver’s lead on top, 10 points ahead of Wanderers, keeping their unbeaten record at 28 games.

After the game Mponda was a happy man.

“It is a game well played on our part. Today the boys have played so well, and scored the most important points, and that is what has gotten us here. I would also like to thank the board of Silver Strikers for their support, we would not have made it through without them,” said Mponda.

This is a ninth league title for the Bankers, they won it last in 2013.
