Mzuzu University set to host launch of MO626 Varsity Games

The National Bank of Malawi is set to launch the MO626 Varsity Games at Mzuzu University on Saturday, November 8, 2025.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Vice President of the Tertiary Education Students Sports Association of Malawi (TESSAM) Geoffrey Biya, said preparations are underway saying he is optimistic that the event will be a great success.

“The competition will involve universities from all regions of the country. Both male and female students will participate in football, basketball and netball,” said Biya.

The National Bank of Malawi has pumped K480 million into the games, a contribution Biya said will help promote student participation and enthusiasm for sports activities across universities.

At the official launch, Mzuzu University will face University of Livingstonia in the opening matches.

In an interview with Wa Ganyu Publications, Director of Sports at Mzuzu University, Thomas Movetie said the institution is fully prepared to host the event and that they are proud to have been selected by TESSAM for the launch.

A total of 21 universities are expected to compete in this year’s games. Vice Chancellor of Mzuzu University, Professor Wales Singini will be the guest of honour.

The Malawi Assemblies Of God University (MAGU) are the defending champions.
