Despite falling to Zambia’s Under-17 girls’ team in the COSAFA Under-17 final, Malawi’s coach Chisomo Nkhoma remains confident in her team’s future.

Speaking after the 3-0 defeat in Namibia, Nkhoma expressed pride in the girls’ performance and was quick to acknowledge their potential despite the loss.

“First of all, let me congratulate Zambia for defending the title. Today was not our day, but I appreciate my girls for what they have done today. They played well. Being in the final for the first time, they have shown us that they are good players. Next time, we will grab the title from Zambia,” said Nkhoma.

Goals from Ruth Mukona, Natasha Katema, and Gift Masimba sealed Zambia’s victory, scoring in the 24th, 27th, and 45th minutes respectively. Nkhoma pointed out that the defeat partly stemmed from a recent goalkeeper change, noting that the new shot-stopper’s inexperience played a role.

Malawi was voted the fair play team

Nonetheless, she expressed confidence in the team’s progress and their ability to compete at the highest level.

“Our girls have shown that they are good players. What is needed now is to motivate them,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of continued development and morale-boosting efforts.

The Junior Scorchers hammered the hosts Namibia in their first game before beating Comoros to reach the semi-finals of the tournament. They reached the final of the COSAFA for the first time by beating Mozambique on Friday.

Despite finishing as runners up, Malawi was voted as the fair play team at the tournament.
