In a dramatic turn of events, Masiya Nyasulu has been elected as the new Chairperson of the Northern Region Football Association (NRFA), succeeding the former chairperson, Mwauka Mwasinga, after securing 16 votes in the election.
The election, which had previously failed in February, was repeated after Nyasulu and Mwasinga had each secured 13 votes in the first round, necessitating a re-run.
This time, Nyasulu emerged victorious, leaving Mwasinga without a vote in the second round.
The election was notable for the absence of delegates from Karonga, Nkhata Bay, and Rumphi who declined to participate in the voting process, resulting in their exclusion from the election.
After declaring him the winner, Nyasulu stated that it is time for the football association to embrace new structures that will push the sport forward in the Northern Region.
He pledged to collaborate with those who contested the elections, as well as other stakeholders, to achieve the development and growth of football in the region.
A Football Association of Malawi (FAM) executive committee member and chairperson of the competitions and marketing committee, Felistus Dosi, spoke positively about the election process.
She expressed satisfaction with the way the election was conducted, praising the smooth transition of leadership.
Nyasulu and his team are now set to take charge, with a focus on bringing fresh ideas and strategies to improve football standards in the region over the next four years.
