Nyirenda has identified one of the biggest challenges since taking charge of the club: many midfielders in Malawi play without contributing enough goals.

He says his technical team is working to change this by encouraging midfielders to play more positively and to become regular goal scorers.

When asked why Bullets’ midfielders often hesitate to take shots at goal, Nyirenda said changing that mentality has become one of the team’s main priorities.

“What I have found since I arrived is that midfielders here play just to play. They play horizontally, not vertically, so we are trying to change all these things so that they become goal scorers. There is a belief among the players that scoring is only for strikers, but now we are teaching them that scoring is for everyone,” he said.

Nyirenda explained that his coaching philosophy is that goals should come from all departments of the team, not just strikers. He believes defenders, midfielders and forwards should all be encouraged to contribute in front of goal to make the team more dangerous in attack.

The former Zambia national team coach is confident his players will adapt to this new approach and contribute more goals as the season progresses.

Nyirenda made these remarks ahead of FCB Nyasa Big Bullets’ FDH Bank Premiership match against Ekhaya FC at Chiwembe Stadium on Sunday.
