The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has appointed French national Yvon Avry as its new Technical Director, following the expiry of Benjamin Kumwenda’s contract with the association.
According to a statement released by FAM on October 17, 2025, a total of 17 applicants from various countries expressed interest in the position. After conducting interviews on September 23, Avry emerged as the successful candidate.
Before joining FAM, Avry served as Technical Advisor for the Fédération Malagasy de Football and also worked as Technical Director for Fosa Juniors FC in Majunga, Madagascar.
The statement further said that prior to his stint in Madagascar, Avry worked as Technical Director for the National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam between 2017 and 2018.
Avry is expected to officially assume his duties on November 3, 2025, where he will be responsible for overseeing technical and football development programs.
FAM has previously appointed expatriates in the same role, including Romanian coach Mario Marian Marinica, who was hired as Technical Director in 2021 before being elevated doubling his roles as head coach of the Malawi national football team, the Flames. Marinica, alongside Meke Mwase, led the Flames to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations finals held in Cameroon in 2022.
