Malawi Queens assistant coach Peace Chawinga Kaluwa says the team already has a preparation programme in place for the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydeny, Australia, following their qualification for the global showpiece.
The Queens secured a bronze medal at the Africa Netball Cup in Nairobi, Kenya. The tournament doubled as a World Cup qualifier and Malawi confirmed their place in Sydney after reaching the last four to secure one of the last two remaining slots with Uganda and South Africa having already qualified.
Kaluwa said the players have been given individual programmes to follow as they return to their respective clubs, ensuring they remain focused on the national team’s World Cup preparations plan.
“There are already programmes laid down for the girls to follow, and all the girls know exactly what they are supposed to do,” said Kaluwa.
Netball Association of Malawi vice president Anastazia Kaphale said the third place finish was a significant achievement for the Queens, considering the level of competition at the continental tournament.
“Position three at the Africa Netball Cup is no mean achievement for our Queens. Every competition is tough, and for us to be number three, it is something we have worked hard for,” said Kaphale.
She said NAM is discussing possible test matches with Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Uganda, while the Queens are also expected to participate in the Spar Challenge in South Africa.
Kaphale then asked the government to complete construction works at the Griffin Indoor Sports Complex, saying access to its spring floor would help the players adjust to surfaces used in international competitions.
Meanwhile, NICO Group head of marketing and customer experience Taweni Gondwe-Xaba said the Queens qualification shows the progress being made in Malawian netball.
She said NICO’s long term support is aimed at contributing to the team’s continued development, particularly through a blend of experienced players and emerging talent.
“World Cup qualification shows that the work being done around this team is producing results,” she said.
