Malawi Women’s National Team Captain, Tabitha Chawinga, is urging Malawians to support a fundraising initiative launched by the First Lady to help the Scorchers prepare for their upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament in Morocco.
The fundraising dinner is organised to help the team with preparations, including travel and logistics, ahead of the country’s first-ever appearance at the African showpiece.
Captain Chawinga expressed gratitude for the First Lady’s support and appealed to the public to participate in the initiative.
“We sincerely thank the First Lady for this timely initiative,” said Captain Chawinga. “I urge all Malawians and well-wishers to support this fundraising. Your help will enable us to prepare well and represent Malawi with pride.”
She emphasised that the team’s success depends on national support, with FAM eyeing a billion Malawi Kwacha from the effort.
The Scorchers face a tough challenge in Group C, where they will play against defending champions Nigeria, Egypt, and regional rivals Zambia.
Their WAFCON campaign kicks off against Nigeria on July 28 at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat, followed by matches against Egypt on August 1 and Zambia on August 5.
Running from July 26 to August 16 in Morocco, the tournament marks a major milestone for women’s football in Malawi and offers a platform for emerging players to shine on the continental scene.
