Malawi’s senior women’s national football team, the Scorchers, have made history by reaching the semi-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and securing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The historic achievement came after the Scorchers defeated Ghana 2-1 in a thrilling quarter-final encounter, completing a comeback after falling behind early in the match.

Ghana took the lead in the sixth minute, but Malawi responded strongly as Temwa Chawinga restored parity in the 13th minute to make it 1-1 before the break.

The Scorchers continued to push for the winning goal after the interval. They were eventually rewarded in the 76th minute when Rose Kabzere found the back of the net after receiving a pass from Temwa Chawinga.

Kabzere’s goal proved decisive as Malawi held on to secure a historic 2-1 victory and book their place in the last four of the continental tournament.

The result also guarantees Malawi a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, marking another major milestone in the country’s football history.

The Scorchers will now face Algeria in the WAFCON semi-final as they continue their remarkable campaign and look to reach their first-ever continental final.
