Despite conceding in the regulation time which forced the game to go into post match penalties, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers goalkeeper William Thole was voted man of the match and won it big.

He was the man of the day after stopping two Bangwe All Stars penalties and scoring one to eliminate Bangwe in the Airtel Top 8 Cup tournament.

For winning the man of the match, Thole took home a miniature, pocketed K100 000 from Airtel Money. Not only that, fans blessed him with cash which is around K70 000 while another supporter gave the 24 year-old keeper a chicken.

Thole was happy for what happened at Mpira Stadium on Saturday afternoon when his side knocked out Bangwe and progressed into the semi-finals.

“I did this for our fans who gave me courage to save those penalties and help my team progress,” he said.

How the game progressed

Wanderers head coach Meke Mwase made a lot of changes to his side benching former captain Stanley Sanudi for the whole match together with Peter Cholopi.

Mwase also benched Cameroon striker Sama Thierry but he was introduced at the start of the second half.

Clement Nyondo was in front partnering Misheck Botomani but could not produce results forcing Mwase to take them out in the second half.

Wanderers were coming into the game with a goal from the first leg match which ended 1-0, the goal was scored by Isaac Kaliati.

Despite them pressing and penetrating into Bangwe’s half, they got it wrong until they conceded at the 54 minutes through Temitope Ojeyinka header connecting home a Richard Rapson diagonal free kick.

Nomads tried to level scores but could not get a goal and after 90 minutes it was 1-0 to Bangwe, 1-all on aggregate calling for penalties to separate the two.

Kaliati, Sama, Thole and Wisdom Mpinganjira scored for Wanderers beating Elias Missi in goals while for Bangwe, Innocent Msowoya and Clever Chikwata scored while Temitope and Felix Demakude missed their penalties as Thole saved them and the match ended 4-2 to Wanderers.

Mwase is ready to take on the winner between Silver Strikers and Dedza Dynamos which will be played in Dedza tomorrow.

“I am ready to face them, otherwise I am happy with my boys today,” he said.

Bangwe coach Trevor Kajawa accepted defeat: “We managed to contain Wanderers but we lost it on penalties, our attention now switched to the league,” he said.
