Mighty Wanderers missed the chance to close the gap on FDH Bank Premiership leaders FCB Nyasa Big Bullets after drawing 1–1 with Karonga United at Karonga Stadium on Sunday.
Clement Nyondo put Wanderers ahead in the 15th minute, but Michael Mwalilino equalised for the hosts in the 79th minute, earning Karonga a point.
A win would have taken Wanderers to 38 points, just one behind Bullets. Instead, the Nomads remain on 36 points, three behind the leaders on 39.
Wanderers coach Bob Mpinganjira described the result as painful, pointing to the challenges of playing away from home.
“Playing away is never easy, and today was a very difficult game. There are a lot of factors that come into play when you’re playing away,” he said.
Mpinganjira added that his team was working to improve its finishing and remained confident it would score.
“But we’re confident we can sort it out and start scoring more goals,” he said.
Karonga United assistant coach Chris Chinkwita said his side had targeted all three points but acknowledged that a draw against title challengers Wanderers was a positive result.
“Getting a point against a strong side like Mighty Wanderers, who are challenging for the title, is a positive result for us, although we are not entirely satisfied because we want to win,” he said.
Chinkwita also raised concerns about some officiating decisions, saying they frustrated his team.
The draw leaves Wanderers with ground to make up on Bullets as the title race continues.
