The Malawi women’s national football team made it two wins from two at the 2026 WAFCON after defeating Egypt three-one in their second Group C match on Saturday.

The victory followed the Scorchers’ memorable three-two win over Nigeria in their opening match, maintaining their perfect start to the tournament.

Rose Kadzere opened the scoring in the thirty-sixth minute before Faith Chimzimu doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time to give the Scorchers a two-nil advantage at the break.

The Scorchers were reduced to ten players in the fifty-second minute when Rose Alfandika was shown a straight red card for a foul as the last defender. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Scorchers remained in control for long periods.

Temwa Chawinga extended Malawi’s lead in the sixty-ninth minute, heading in a ball flicked her way by Rose Kabzere, before Egypt pulled one back two minutes later. The Scorchers held on to secure a deserved three-one victory.

Scorchers head coach Lovemore Fazili admitted Egypt proved to be tough opponents, despite their heavy defeat to Zambia in their opening match.

“We knew they would come at us strongly, and they did. We created plenty of scoring opportunities but could not convert them in the first half. After the break we made some adjustments, scored three goals, and even after the red card the players kept fighting until the end,” said Fazili.

He praised his players for their determination and said their character gives him confidence that the team can reach the quarter-finals.

The result, combined with Nigeria’s victory over Zambia, sends Malawi to the top of Group C with six points from two matches. Zambia and Nigeria have three points each, while Egypt remain without a point.

The Scorchers will face Zambia in their final Group C match.
